Antebellum Slavery in the South
- Refers to America gaining independence and before waging civil war.
- Slavery became en-grained into political and the economical structure of the South.
Run-Away Slaves
- While many slave holders experienced many runaway slave, Many owners were forced to buy female slaves. The main reason for purchasing slave women was for the owners sexual desire.
- A married male slave had more responsibility to his mate and children and therefore would not try to escape.
Slave Laws
- Blacks held no legal rights in the Country
- Slave Code of 1740: Controlled the population of enslaved African Americans, Also prohibited slaves from gathering without white supervision.
- Created harsher punishments for disobeying the Laws.
Slave Trade
- Eighty Five -thousand slaves were transported every year for a century.
- 90 percent of enslaved Africans were imported into the Caribbean and South America
- Prices of slaves varied widely over time, due to factors including supply, and changes in prices of commodities such as cotton.
